From Inside the Illness

The Faces of Bipolar

The Personas Bipolar Disorder May Speak Through
and What They Feel Like from the Inside.

by Jeremy M. Davis

Bipolar disorder doesn’t just change your mood. It changes who you are. Not forever, but completely — and usually without warning.

A book about bipolar disorder, told from the inside

Most books on bipolar disorder explain it from the outside. The Faces of Bipolar starts from the inside. Author Jeremy M. Davis names ten distinct personas the illness can produce, among them The Antagonist, The Liar, The Critic, and The Grandiose Champion. Each one is aware of the others, and each wears the same face.

Every chapter puts you inside the experience before it explains it. That is how you learn to recognize a persona when it shows up, and how you choose to respond.

Who this book is for

  • People living with bipolar disorder who want language for what they experience
  • Family, partners, and friends trying to understand the person behind the illness
  • Clinicians and counselors looking for a lived-experience perspective

THE AUTHOR

He’s in it too.

From the outside, Jeremy Davis looked like someone who had it figured out: a software engineer, a career in Silicon Valley, a home, a daughter. A 2012 diagnosis finally named what was running underneath. He is not writing from the other side of this illness. He is still in it.

He doesn’t promise it gets easy. What he is certain of is that staying is worth it.

Rawly Human & Educational

Reading Faces of Bipolar felt like a front row view into an eye-opening journey of what it truly means to navigate Bipolar Disorder daily. Jeremy Davis has a gift for articulating complex emotions and experiences in a way that feels relatable, rawly human and educational. The way he uses honest experiences brings encouragement with genuine hope and practical understanding. If you are supporting a loved one or simply seeking to better understand mental health, this book is an invaluable read.

A difficult subject handled with courage, honesty, and hope.

What makes this book stand out is how honestly it portrays the different sides of living with bipolar disorder. The chapters on The Liar, The Critic, and The Grandiose Champion make the experience feel personal rather than clinical.

I especially appreciated the balance between raw honesty and practical guidance. It doesn’t romanticize the illness or reduce it to textbook definitions—it explores what these experiences can feel like, how they affect the people around you, and what can be done when they appear.

A book worth reading

This is a book EVERYONE should read! This is so well written by someone with first hand knowledge & the experience of living & managing this disorder! What I never knew , I now have a much clearer understanding of, and how this affects those that struggle with this. Anyone, will be better off for having read this book.

Completely different perspective of bipolar disorder. Well worth the read.

I read this book in about 2.5 hours. I found it to be intelligently written, incredibly honest and thought provoking. Having had a bipolar family member, it made me rethink every belief I ever had about who that person truly was.

The personas were thoughtfully and appropriately named. I have never read an insiders perspective of bipolar disorder though I have read multiple college psychology books over the years.

This book has great insight and will be helpful to clinicians and patients alike.

Davis’s thought-provoking narrative flows easily as he shares how the disorder altered who he is. He is candid and authentic, writing with true warmth and empathy, as well as deep understanding of his topic. The author’s caring approach includes a section on suicidal ideation with a trigger warning as he reveals how he dealt with his own crisis.

What stayed with me most was how openly Jeremy describes experiences that are difficult to put into words. His perspective made the subject feel much more personal.

I appreciated that the book was written from lived experience rather than only from a clinical perspective.

This led to a meaningful discussion in our book club. There was so much to talk about regarding identity, mental health, and self understanding.

I found the persona framework unique and surprisingly powerful. It gave a concrete way to understand experiences that can be difficult to explain.

Being diagnosed Bipolar myself this book puts so much perspective together that I didn’t even know of. All the personas are relatable. Jeremy wrote this book so well. Easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much for this amazing book! I could not put it down!!!

Honest, Raw, and Vulnerable

A raw, compelling account of the authors struggle with an illness that has cost him so much. Jeremy writes with the calm, conversational tone of a friend who just wants you to know more about what it’s like inside of his head, and the impact that his illness has on both the everyday as well as the tremendous costs that he has had to face over his life. The book is well written, and very firmly navigates the difference between “This is why I do the things I do” without ever dropping into asking for pity or excuse. The tone and word choice is excellent, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has BiPolar or who has a friend/loved one with the condition as a means of understanding the tremendous battle being fought every second of every day.
